Relationship Struggles

If you and your partner have been arguing lately, it may just be extra stress from your jobs or other outside forces that will disappear with time. Or, it could be a sign of more significant underlying issues requiring the help of couples’ counseling. How do you know for sure? As a psychotherapist, I have 30 years of experience working with couples. Could you benefit from my experience? Here are some signs that it’s time to seek help:1. Your relationship feels more like being roommates than lovers.

  1. Arguing has become the primary form of communication when discussing difficult issues.
  2. Rebuilding your relationship with your partner is beginning to feel hopeless.
  3. You’re starting to feel resentment toward your partner. For example, thinking “I’ll never live the life I want to live with my partner” is a sign of resentment.
  4. You make excuses, like staying late at the office, not to be around your partner.
  5. Your relationship feels like a struggle for power where you’re always trying to have the last word.

If any of these signs are apparent in your relationship, it’s probably time to make an appointment for couples’ counseling. Counseling helps get your relationship back on the right track, so you can begin to love each other the way you did before.

Not Getting Along?

I named my company Getting Along, Inc. because I help people get along. Relationship issues are the most common reason people call me. I’ve helped countless people improve their relationships by taking a common sense, practical approach. I can help improve your relationship too, no matter what type of relationship you have.

Regardless of the nature of your relationship or situation, a major problem you face is arguing. Quite often, by the time most relationships make it to my office, the arguing has become the main way of communication and rebuilding the relationship seems hopeless. Often, within the first session, hope can be restored. I can help you stop arguing and learn to communicate effectively.

My blog, The Water We Swim In, can give you some idea of my thoughts and approach to relationships. The post titled, “What is Love?” may be of special interest.
